Why Levothyroxine Causes Weight Gain and How to Prevent it. Are you on Levothyroxine but still gaining weight? Believe it or not this is big problem for a lot of people. But the bigger question is this: How can you be gaining weight on a medication that is supposed to INCREASE your metabolism? Your thyroid, under the influence of TSH (if working properly), pumps out primarily the thyroid hormone T4. What you need to understand is that T4 is an inactive hormone. By itself it doesn't do anything for your body except act as a reservoir for T3 and T3 is the active thyroid hormone in your body. T3 is what enters into your cells and turns on the genes that increase your metabolism, help with hair growth and give you energy. In order for T4 thyroid hormone to be active in your body it MUST be converted to the active hormone T3. Turn T4 into T3 which enters into your cells and activates genetic transcription (this is what you WANT to have happen and what most doctors assume is happening)or.. So if you understand this concept the next question you should be asking yourself is this: What causes your body to turn T4 into the inactive reverse T3? Most Doctors will prescribe T4 medication under the assumption that your body will have no problem converting T4 into T3. And in a perfect world. But that's not the world we live in..? Chances are high that you are dealing with 1 or more of them. And in states such as these your body will turn T4 into reverse T3 as a way to . Patients in this study were given T4 only medications and treated based on their TSH. The researches tested their resting energy expenditure (this is a way to test for basal metabolic rate or metabolism) both before they added the thyroid hormone and after they suppressed the TSH. Do you know what they found? It showed that patients taking thyroid hormone (even doses that lower the TSH to < 0. NOT have an increase in metabolism or a change in their body weight. Enter your text here.. Don't let your doctor convince you that you are hyperthyroid when you have crushing fatigue, weight gain, hair loss and constipation - it just doesn't work that way and you can't tell someone they are hyperthyroid based on their TSH alone. And here is another very important study comparing equivalent dosing (based on pituitary function and TSH) of T4 medication vs T3 only medication: This study showed that patients who were taking T3 only medication had more weight loss and better cholesterol than patients who were taking T4 only medication (like Synthroid and Levothyroxine). What's also important is that the patients who took T3 did not have any change in blood pressure, heart rate or insulin sensitivity. Meaning the T3 only thyroid medication was tolerated very well. So now we have several different studies showing that patients not only do VERY well on medications containing T3 thyroid hormone, but that these medications are also WELL tolerated. You can read more about the use of T3 only medication (Liothyronine and Cytomel) for weight loss here. In many patients your body may actually convert it to reverse T3 thereby slowing your metabolism, and actually making your condition and symptoms WORSE. But here is another important note side note: Natural Dessicated Thyroid still contains T4 (in fact the majority is still T4). People with this problem need pure T3 medications like Liothyronine to improve symptoms and lose weight. You can read more about case studies using NDT + T3 medications here. You can find a guide on how to properly dose Levothyroxine here. Some of these can be performed at home and others will require a Doctor. It's also worth pointing out that at the end of the day you will need to find a Doctor that is willing to work with you because if you are not getting enough thyroid hormone then you will either need MORE medication or a NEW medication to feel better. Your basal metabolic rate is basically how many calories you are burning on a daily basis. This number is really important when it comes to weight loss because it accounts for more than 9. When you exercise you are only focusing on about 5- 1. If your body temperature is not increasing then this may be an early sign that you are on the wrong thyroid medication or the wrong dose of thyroid medication. Many factors can alter your body temperature but it is a relatively easy way to check and when you combine it with the other methods listed below it can be quite effective. You can read more about using basal body temperature to . It is very important that you stay in bed (do not get up to go to the bathroom) before you check your body temperature. Also try to check the temperature at the same time every day. I recommend using this thermometer for the best results. Plot your morning body temperature and watch for patterns. Your body temperature should be > 9. Anything less than this indicates that your metabolism may be slowed. You can see her body temperature is quite low and the pattern is very chaotic for the first 1. As she reaches ovulation her body temperature increases and stays constant and then after ovulation it remains high and constant. This reflects what should happen with body temperature when starting thyroid medication and is an indication that the medication is working to increase metabolism. It's also a reflection of your metabolism and your basal metabolic rate. Some patients believe that their heart rate in the 5. And that is true if you exercise daily and are not overweight at all, but if you do not exercise and you are 2. NOT a good thing. Instead it is an early indicator that your body is NOT burning an adequate amount of calories per day which will ultimately lead to weight gain. A resting heart rate lower than that indicates an issue (though doesn't necessarily mean it is thyroid related). Step #3: Check a Complete Thyroid Panel. EVERY patient with hypothyroidism should get this panel and they should understand the difference between . Your Doctor is most likely basing his recommendations off of the . Please note that these values refer to patients who are NOT already on thyroid medication. If you are on thyroid medication then you need to use different ranges. The complete thyroid panel: TSH - Should be < 2. TSH is so inaccurate) Free T3 - Should be in the top 5. T3 syndrome which means T3 is usually in the low- normal range but definitely not optimal. Total T3 - Should be in the upper 1/2 of the reference range. Free T4 - Should be in the top 5. Reverse T3 - Should be less < 1. T4 to T3 conversion (patients with low free T3 syndrome often have low- normal free T3 with high reverse T3 levels)Thyroid Antibodies - Should be as close to 0 as possible, higher levels may indicate autoimmune thyroiditis and many patients with Hashimoto's have symptoms of hypothyroidism with . You want to compare yourself to healthy adults, not just the . Because, let's face it, the . What are you supposed to do if you haven't been able to lose weight despite increasing your dose of levothyroxine or synthroid? You have 2 ways to go about this: 1. Change your thyroid medication to include T3 containing medications (NDT and/or T3 only medications)2. Boost thyroid conversion by . This allows you to bypass the T4 to T3 conversion process. Your body can only make Reverse T3 if T4 is present, so if you only provide T3 to the body then it simply doesn't have the option to create Reverse T3 and your levels will naturally fall. You can accomplish this by either switching from Levothyroxine to NDT or by simply adding Liothyronine or Cytomel to your total dose. This step will require that a Doctor is willing to work with you however, which is why I always recommend seeking out a provider with advanced knowledge about thyroid function. Even adding 5- 1. Liothyronine can be enough for some people (though not the majority). As a primer remember this: T4 only medications: Levothyroxine, Synthroid, Levoxyll, Tirosint. NDT (T4 + T3 medications): Armour thyroid, Naturethroid, WP thyroid. T3 only medications: Liothyronine, Cytomel and SR T3 (compounded). Does Levothyroxine ever Cause Weight Loss? Since you are reading this you are most likely not one of those patients but I have written about it extensively in this post. Some patients have single nucleotide polymorphisms (genetic changes) . If you have this polymorphism then Levothyroxine and Synthroid will probably not be the best medication for you. On the opposite side of the spectrum some patients are what I refer to as . You can give them T4 and they will turn it into T3 without any problems at all, and these patients often react to T3 containing medications with palpitations and/or anxiety. If you can't tolerate the proper dose of Levothyroxine or synthroid then you won't lose weight with the medication. What I mean by that is this: The more inflammation you have, the more chronic pain you have, the more medications you take, the more weight you have to lose, the less likely you are to do well on Levothyroxine. Why? Because all of these conditions will make thyroid conversion more difficult. So yes, Levothyroxine can cause weight loss but it needs to be at the right dose and in the right individual. As a quick aside, if your Doctor isn't willing to add T3 or NDT to your regimen then you might be able to get him/her to prescribe Tirosint instead. Tirosint is a T4 only medication but has very few inactive ingredients and many patients tolerate this medication better than Levothyroxine or Synthroid. Bottom line: Even if your Doctor isn't willing to change your medication to NDT, they still may be willing to either add Liothyronine (T3 only medication) or switch your Levothyroxine to Tirosint. Both of these options may improve your thyroid conversion and lead to weight loss in certain individuals. Steps YOU can Take Today to Lose Weight and Boost Thyroid Function. These steps should be taken in addition to the steps outlined above for best results. Can- Am Outlander L 5. DPS Review. Winner 2. Value 4. The Outlander L models feature a bit of trickle- down design, combined with some of the company’s latest technology, to achieve a price point for its 5. V- Twin model that’s only $5. Polaris Sportsman 5. The power steering equipped Outlander L 5. DPS ($7,8. 99) we’re testing retails for $1. Can- Am’s own, premium, Outlander 5. DPS model. Can- Am is not only looking to gain a greater share of buyers shopping for new ATV, it is looking to entice those shopping for used machine to buy a new Can- Am. For many consumers shopping for a car or truck, the difference between buying a slightly used or brand new vehicle comes down to having the security of a manufacturer’s warranty. Can- Am realized this and gave the Outlander L models a mind- blowing five- year warranty that is unrivaled in the industry. Breaking Down the Outlander L 5. DPS BRP built the Outlander L around the G2 chassis, introduced back in 2. Constructed of steel, the G2 frame was designed to significantly improve strength and rigidity. Five- way preload adjustable shocks work with dual A- arms up front and Can- Am’s unique trailing arm rear suspension. The trailing arm design was simplified just a bit, although suspension travel numbers are competitive at both ends, delivering 8. Caster was reduced on the L models, which lessens steering effort, especially on the non- power- steering equipped models. Reducing caster also makes an ATV’s front end steer more responsively. The G2’s revised rear geometry lowered the trailing arm’s mounting points, promoting rear end squat under acceleration for improved traction and handling. The trailing arm rear suspension doles out 8. Powering the 5. 00 L is a 4. V- Twin Rotax engine with four- valves and single- overhead- cams per cylinder. Fuel injection delivers air and fuel to the top end via a 4. This engine was updated two years ago, where power output was increased by 5. That’s 1. 8 horsepower more than the impressive Sportsman 5. Kawasaki Brute Force 7. The fully automatic transmission features High and Low forward range, in addition to Neutral, Reverse, and Park. Engine braking is standard equipment on all L models. Selecting between the transmission’s ranges is done by a low profile, right side- mounted, gated shifter. COMPARISON: Read our review of the 2. Polaris Sportsman 5. EPSAnother Can- Am hallmark found on the Outlander L models is its Visco- Lok QE four- wheel drive system. The switch by your right thumb selects between two- and four- wheel- drive. When in four- wheel- drive, the Visco- Lok operates like a limited- slip front differential, allowing for easy steering. Our DPS model features Can- Am’s Tri- Mode Dynamic Power Steering system. Like most power steering systems, it uses the vehicle’s speed along with sensors to measure torque placed on the steering from the rider and from impacts with trail obstacles to help determine the amount of assistance needed to reduce steering effort and bump feedback. What makes the DPS system unique is that it offers three different levels of assistance to suit your use or riding style. Dual hydraulic disc brakes up front and a single hydraulic disc brake in the rear slow the Outlander L 5. The brakes feature 2. DPS models feature centerless, cast- aluminum wheels, designed to dress up looks and reduce rotating mass; base model Outlander Ls feature black steel wheels. Wrapped around all Outlander L wheels are 2. Carlisle Trail Wolf tires. For work duties, the Outlander L can tow 1,3. Steel racks are rated to hold a generous 1. Can- Am’s Linq quick attach accessory system. A box located in the canter of the rear rack provides 2. Front and rear steel racks can hold a combined 3. Dimensionally, the L measures in at 4. It has a seat height of 3. Its 7. 03- pound claimed dry weight is 1. Sportsman 5. 70 EPS. Other details include the Outlander L’s backlit digital instrument display, intelligently mounted in front of the bodywork in front of the handlebar. This allows the rider to easily swap out to an aftermarket handlebar. Riding the Outlander L 5. No matter the price or the warranty, the Can- Am Outlander L would not be no big deal if its performance was lacking. We will put our cards on the table right now . Compared to the brutish low- end power of the Polaris Sportsman 5. Rotax 5. 00 engine delivers low- end power in a smooth and mellow manner . A little more low- end torque could come in handy for wheelies over obstacles or attacking super steep climbs with little run at the bottom. On the flip side, its smooth delivery makes the most of available traction on slippery rocks and slick wet creek banks. Low end power comes on smoothly from the Outlander L 5. V- Twin engine. Midrange power on the Outlander L is abundant, feeling almost like a Sport ATV with its broad surge of power. When you’re racing through the woods, the midrange hit lets you rip out of corners and its top- end feels like its willing to rev forever on long straights. This is a mid- bore motor that could give some big bores a run for their money on the trail. COMPARISON: Read our review of the 2. Can- Am Outlander 5. Video. Some riders will always want the option of locking in their machine’s front differential. However, our test riders found the Visco- Lok QE pretty hard to fault. We challenged a number of slick trails, in addition to repeatedly climbing a gnarly rock climb. We felt the system worked as advertised. Unlike the old Visco- Lok system, which took noticeably longer to lock in when needed, the new QE system is so much more responsive, you hardly notice it; you simply have traction when you need it. Steering on the Outlander L is sharp and responsive, working well on tight switchback trails. Responding well to handlebar input allows you to attack tight corners aggressively, or just cruise along casually without wearing yourself out cranking on the handlebar. At high speeds the responsive steering makes the front end feel a little twitchy. Switching to the Low assist setting helped reduce the front end’s nervous feeling at high- speeds, while the High assist setting was preferred for rock crawling, hauling, and aggressively attacking the tight, twisty stuff. We found steering to be responsive, performing well on tricky terrain. Cornering is predictable and stability is good with a small amount of front end dive in turns. Powerslides are a little challenging when traction is abundant, due to the mellow low- end power, but are possible if you are aggressive enough to time your corner entry with the engine’s midrange hit. On climbs the Outlander is well behaved. Its longer 5. 1- inch wheelbase and smooth low- end power help you keep the front wheels in contact with the ground, maintaining traction and control. The ATV descends nearly as predictably as it climbs. Suspension performance is plush, yet responsive. The preload adjustable shocks came in the middle setting from the dealer. We added one notch to the front shocks to reduce body roll in corners and add just a bit more bottoming resistance. We then went down one to two notches on the rear shocks depending on the weight and speed of the rider. Softening the rear shocks helps the back end squat down more easily under acceleration, lowering the ATV’s center of gravity and allowing you to drive harder out of corners. After some adjustments, the suspension proved to be plush and able to handle everything we dished out. Our new settings allowed us to push harder on fast trails and improved traction during rock crawling, and balanced suspension front to rear. The Outlander’s shocks offer the supple feeling you want from a big 4. Traversing chop, small whoops and rain ruts at speed, the Outlander’s chassis and suspension seem happiest when you’re out of the saddle on and on the gas keeping the front end light and driving the rear end into the bumps. While heading downhill, the brakes offer a good amount of stopping power. We found the brakes to offer good feel and excellent progression through both the hand lever and rear brake pedal. The brakes do, however, take a bit more pressure to stop in a hurry than the outstanding binders on the Grizzly 5. Polaris 5. 70. Engine braking performs superbly. COMPARISON: Read our review of the 2. Kymco MXU5. 00i. The Outlander’s ergonomics drew rave reviews. If Sport riding is your thing, the Outlander L 5. The handlebar is well within reach and its bend and height feel spot on. The wide, raised, serrated footpegs also got high marks, as did the seat, which was soft without allowing you to sink in to hamper movement. Overall fit and finish seemed pretty good. The dual 3. 5 watt lights were sufficient for night riding. One rider felt the orange backlit digital dash could offer a bit more contrast at night. Cost Cutting Tactics So what, exactly are you giving up with the Outlander L 5. Outlander 5. 00? Rear trailing arms were simplified in design, which led to a half- inch loss in rear suspension travel (we didn’t miss it). The 2. 6- inch tires on the Premium Outlander 5. Outlander L. Tire and suspension changes result in a half- inch loss in ground clearance and seat height was lowered by 0. Composite racks were traded in for older- style steel racks and top- mounted rear storage box, which offers a bit less storage space. However, the steel racks are rated to haul 2. Finally, the premium Outlander 5. Outlander L 5. 00 has two, but it wasn’t enough of a difference to send us packing when the sun went down. Ride the Can- Am Outlander L 5. Outlander 5. 00. Honestly, if we didn’t have the premium models’ specs to compare to, we wouldn’t feel like we were giving up anything with the Outlander L. It can work hard but we were most enamored with its spirited playful nature. It may be the sportiest machine in the 5. Utility class. Both the base model 5. DPS will set you back $5. Sportsman 5. 70, which it was built to compete with. We feel its performance and price alone are enough to make prospective Polaris buyers take a second look.
